HemoG.L.O.W.bin Launch Event Press Release

Washington, D.C. | On September 23rd, D.C. resident Alexandria Smith will hold a launch event for a nonprofit, “HemoG.L.O.W.bin,” dedicated to Sickle Cell Awareness. The event will be held at La Cosecha Balcón at Union Market.

Alexandria founded HemoG.L.O.W.bin (Giving Life Over Worry) non-profit organization with a mission to raise awareness for sickle cell disease through entertainment while promoting health and wellness to the SC community.

Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited chronic blood disorder that affects millions of people around the world and is most common within the Black community. Individuals with sickle cell have less access to comprehensive team care compared to those with other genetic disorders.

Despite the majority of sickle cell warriors experiencing similar symptoms, sickle cell warriors do not have the same experience dealing with this condition due to racial and socioeconomic inequities that exist within the healthcare system. HemoG.L.O.W.bin will work to eliminate these barriers through impactful storytelling, meaningful partnerships, and so much more.

“As one of the many people impacted by sickle cell, I have always felt the need to hone in on storytelling, sharing my own experiences – all to raise awareness – because only us warriors know what it’s like. If we don’t do our best to share with the world what sickle cell actually looks like, then this disease will never get the research and funding its warriors deserve. We hope that this launch event is just the start of a long journey to fulfilling what sickle cell awareness should fully look like.”
